Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

Little Pea

Rosenthal, Amy Krouse, and Jen Corace. Little Pea. San Francisco: Chronicle Books, 2005. 36 pages. 978-0811846585. Board book. Preschool and up. Official website: www.chroniclekids.com

Little Pea turns an idea inside out and upside down, with a protagonist who does not want to indulge in developing his sweet tooth as all goods peas in this imaginative pea world are expected. Little Pea's parents beg him to eat sweets in order to be a good strong pea. Finally they strike a compromise, after Little Pea eats five pieces of candy, he gets to eat spinach.  Parents will relate to the age-old struggle (i.e. "eat your vegetables!") to promote healthy eating in this story that uses a successful form of reverse psychology to encourage healthy lifestyles. Rosenthal's knack to make parent issues funny makes this a successful book that will certainly to be eaten up by both children and parents.
