Elephant 嘟寶 (Dubao) has difficulties sleeping. He even tries counting animals. He counts sheep. That does not work. So, he counts chickens, rabbits, pigs, elephants... Still no sleep. He just became more annoyed. Until a Shamen Monkey gives Dubao a magical book that will help him sleep. It works so well that Dubao totes the book around everywhere as a very valuable treasure. He becomes afraid that it might be stolen. He begins to think that everyone is out to take his precious book. He really begins to go crazy. Then one day, the nightmare occurs. The book is gone. He searches high and low. It is gone, someone did steal the book. He searches to find it and in the process finds it and another answer for his sleep issues.  One that neatly encourages him to have a nightly story read to him.

This award winning book is a great bedtime novel for toddlers and young children. It carries a wise message of sharing. The gift becomes a burden for the elephant. And, the process of suspecting, hiding, and protecting the book hurt him more than the lack of sleep in the beginning. When Dubao shares and changes his mindset the world becomes a more beautiful happy place for him. Friends seek out his company. Contentment itself becomes the sleep aid. That along with the peace of being read a story at bedtime. These messages are great for young children. It encourages the nightly bedtime book practice and also lets a child know that others experience the problem of falling asleep. Children do fall asleep after a parent/caregiver reads to them. It becomes an important connection.

The beautiful illustrations are very soft and subdued. The use of color and the manner the illustrations are orchestrated create and communicate a calm mood that is appropriate for a bedtime book. The artist uses the cool colors of night juxtaposed and shuffled with bright warm colors of day to communicate Dubao's extreme mood shifts. The reader and listening will subconsciously follow these color mood shifts along with the story. In addition, the artists variation of brush strokes gives different animals varying emotive qualities.

The author wrote the storyline in a way that help young children's literacy. Verse is used and it can help children learn to read. It also encourages literacy through print motivation. Dubao lets children know that reading before bedtime helps brings a more peaceful sleep. This book is also accessible as a motion e-picture book online through GrimmPress and YouTube (see below).
