The rescue of a whale that has been stranded on a beach.
When a whale becomes stranded on a beach, a family needs to take quick action to rescue it. Rescue teams are called, the whale is kept wet, and more people gather to try to push it back into the ocean until finally the whale is pushed back into the ocean and rejoins a pod of whales (assumingly his family).
This book is great for a young child because it evokes empathy for the whale and encourages problem solving. Inportantly, the family stays with the whale until the dilemma is resolved. They do not depend on rescue workers or 'hand off' the problem. Other 'good samaritans' offer to help. People genuinely care and do not become bystanders sitting off behind a line. Nor, are they organized people paid to help.
Repetitive text allows a young child to predict and participate which is very effective and appropriate for this book. We want to save the whale.
The illustrations clearly communicate the storyline in a peaceful way. Who would've thought that a story of a beached whale could be a successful and peaceful book for young children? The author and illustrator followed their beliefs, focused on an important issue, and the result is this meaningful story.
